The Penguin

Penguins are birds, but they are unlike birds in several ways. Their wings are flippers, and they cannot fly in the air.Penguin do, however, 'fly' in the water, at speeds up to 30 miles (48 kms) an hour. While swiming, they can dive with a thrust of their flippers and travel 30 feet (9 meters) underwater before surfacing. They surface with such force that they may soar into the air, like porpoises. Some can leap cut of the water onto ledge 7 feet (2 meters) above the surface.

On land, penguins use their flippers for fighting and for balancing as they walk. Penguins waddle slowly long, standing up straight like a person. When travelling over snow and ice, they may floop on their bellies and row with their feet. They also use their flippers when in a great hurry. This way of travelling is called tobogganing.
